How To Choose: Before You Start
Looking for the right air conditioning solution? With this guide, we’ll help you work out how to choose the option that works best for you. We have four main types of portable units available for rent or sale. Our team will tailor your package to suit your needs thanks to our huge industry experience, as well as our extensive range of Portable Air Conditioners.
Four Main Types:
- Evaporative Coolers (Swamp Coolers)
- Exhaust Tube Air Conditioning
- Split-Type Air Conditioning (Refrigerant)
- Split-Type Air Conditioning (Water Cooled)
How To Choose: What To Consider
A key thing to think about is the level of cooling duty you will need. This will come down to a number of factors, including the size of the area; the number of people in that area; and items that might generate heat – such as PCs and office machines. In addition, you’ll also need to think about the number of windows and the direction of the sun too.
It is important to work out the right level of cooling you require. This is because the right call will save hire costs and make sure you get the perfect solution. At-A-Glance Guide
7,500 BTU (2.2kW) | 150 square feet |
9,000 BTU (2.6kW) | 250 square feet |
10,000 BTU (2.9kW) | 300 square feet |
12,000 BTU (3.5kW) | 400 square feet |
13,000 BTU (3.8kW) | 450 square feet |
14,000 BTU (4.1kW) | 500 square feet |
Different factors will reduce how effective your portable air conditioners are. Here are just some solutions that can either increase or decrease BTUs if you think an external factor will alter your cooler performance:
- Cut the capacity you need by 10% if your room is heavily shaded
- Boost your capacity by 10% if your room is very sunny
- Add 600 BTU for each extra person (beyond two people) in the same room
- Add 4,000 BTU if the room is a hotter than a normal environment i.e. a kitchen
After deciding the BTU/kW rating you need, the next issue is what type of Portable Air Conditioner to choose.
Portable Air Conditioners
The type of Portable Air Conditioner you pick may depend on where you plan to exhaust it. Exhaust Tube Air Conditioners remove heat from the refrigeration circuit via exhaust tubes. Ideally, you will direct these tubes out of an adjacent window. In some settings, however, you can remove the heat via a ceiling void or into other space that’s not in use. Each model and size of our Exhaust Tube units is capable of different performance.
Evaporative Coolers
This type of unit cools the air through the evaporation of water. They are an excellent fit for dry or low-humidity environments. With their efficient use of electricity and lack of refrigerants (CFCs or HCFCs), these units are eco-friendly, cost-effective and simple to use.
Our climate might not always be dry, but these units can be very useful for sites such as industrial plants, commercial kitchens, laundries, dry cleaners, and greenhouses, as well as for spot cooling in factories, sports centres and more. And if you need a unit to cool a specific area or group of people, this is the ideal option.
Meanwhile, you can use our evaporative coolers alongside other portable units to create a more natural, breezy and cool air environment – yet still retaining full control over the temperature.
